Gumbo Cook-Off

The Gumbo Cookoff has been cancelled.

To add to our celebration of Cajun cuisine, 2024 will be our second year to host a Gumbo Cookoff.

Gumbo is the dish most associated with the Cajun people and can be described as a soup or stew with a roux base. Roux is flour and oil cooked to a golden brown. It can take a long time to cook and is usually cooked in an iron skillet to evenly distribute the heat. Many kinds of meat may be used in gumbo. Seafood is a big favorite including shrimp, crab and oysters. Crawfish, sausage, chicken, turkey and other meats are also used. Vegetables such as peppers, celery, onion and garlic may be added to gumbo, as well as okra. A flavorful stock is an important ingredient.

The food tickets you buy at the ticket booth may be presented to a gumbo cook and they will give you a sample of their gumbo from 11:00 a.m. until sold out. Gumbo tickets are $2.00 for each sample or $4.00 for a cup. Sample all of the gumbo and cast your vote for People’s Choice!

The entry fee to participate April 20, 2024, in the Gumbo Cookoff is $50 and for a donation, spectators are invited to taste participants’ entries. The number of entries wil be limited to 40 teams. Prizes wil be awarded for First Place, Second Place and People’s Choice Award in two categories, High School Competition Teams and Other Teams.
